We LOVE barbecue sauce! The problem is that most bbq sauces are made with corn syrup and other ingredients containing large amounts of sugar. If you want to buy BBQ sauces with less sugar and calories, be prepared to spend a significant amount of money for a small amount of sauce.

Thankfully Dr. Anna is very good at coming up with recipes for things we like to keep on hand. Buying the ingredients for this BBQ sauce may have an up front cost, but over time this recipe will save you a good chunk of change on your grocery bill.

Disclaimer: this is not a sugar free recipe. It uses Agave nectar which does have sugar in it! This is simply a low sugar, low glycemic recipe!

Dr. Anna’s BBQ Sauce

Makes 2 Small mason jars worth of sauce

2 2/3 cups chicken broth

6 tbsp Agave (honey or maple syrup are good substitutes)

2 cans of tomato paste

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

4 tbsp dijon mustard

4 tsp paprika

2 tsp onion powder

2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp cayenne (optional if you like spice!)

1/3 cup coconut aminos

Put all ingredients into a sauce pan and simmer on medium or low heat for 7-10 minutes until thick.

Continuously stir or whisk while cooking so it doesn’t settle and burn to the pan!
